Job Description

We are searching for an experienced leader to join our client's team as the Vice President of Software Engineering. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience building software engineering capabilities from the ground up, will have a strategic mindset, technical vision and strong business acumen.

The Vice President will partner with the CIO, IT Management Team and Business Stakeholders to contribute to and execute on the strategic objectives for the Credit Unions technology platforms in alignment with product roadmaps and delivery schedules.
This position is accountable for managing multiple, complex technical roadmaps for our technology platforms that require considerable resources (including nearshore teams) and have a substantial effect on member service and will significantly impact the overall welfare of the credit union. This position provides leadership; exercises judgment and independent decision-making; motivates and manages enterprise-wide teams; transforms strategies into implementation plans to achieve key success measures on time and within budget while maintaining the highest security standards.

Supervisory responsibilities (reporting structure):
This position reports directly to the CIO.

This position has the following direct reports; Director of Software Development and Data Analytics and AVP of Information Security.

Nature and Scope: (daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly tasks, duties and responsibilities):

  • Lead growing team of talented Engineers, Quality Engineering and Data Analytics staff. Lead Information Security staff for the enterprise.
  • Cultivate, attract, develop, and retain the best technical talent, including nearshore strategic partner resources. Provide technical guidance, mentorship and coaching to entire technology team.
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, trends, technologies and processes to ensure the highest quality technology delivery.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Software Development and Data Analytics to architect, design and develop enterprise-wide solutions with a focus on security, performance, and quality.
  • Contribute to the development of our Agile software development process, test-driven development and DevOps practices.
  • Oversee resources encompassing all aspects of the software development life cycle and foster a culture of delivering quality software on time and on budget.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of software development through collaboration with staff and peers including architectural reviews, security and compliance reviews, code reviews, quality gates, and the delivery pipeline.
  • Regularly evaluate team composition to improve efficiency and effectiveness, hold team(s) accountable for commitments and constantly facilitate higher velocity and quality
  • Collaborate with product owners and project delivery teams to drive the Agile process, including release and sprint cycles, to ensure high quality releases delivered on schedule.
  • Serve on Architecture Review Board to review and evaluate new technology
  • Lead Software Engineering Department annual operational and strategic planning, including fostering innovation, planning projects, and organizing and negotiating the allocation of resources.
  • Create, monitor and adhere to annual budgets for the Software Engineering Department and ensure compliance with stated goals, guidelines, and objectives.
  • Collaborate with Information Security staff and IT Infrastructure to formulate and implement a strategy for Cloud - including developing frameworks and internal standards and governing policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Information Security staff and IT Infrastructure to formulate and implement a DevOps assembly line including CI/CD, monitoring, SecOps, configuration and release management.
  • Develop and implement IT policies and procedures, including those for secure software development, enterprise information security and disaster recovery.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of disaster recovery and business continuity plans, procedures, as well as annual audits and examinations.
  • Negotiate and administer vendor, consultant contracts and service agreements.
  • Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with the organization’s executives, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent IT activities.
  • Manage Software Engineering Department staff, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, training, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions.

Education, skills, & abilities (qualifications and experience required for this position):

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive engineering management with at least 5 years’ experience as a VP of Engineering
  • Proven experience building and leading high performing teams with a track record of delivering.
  • Proven experience as a relationship builder with the ability to influence beyond IT. Must exhibit leadership skills and demonstrate the ability to facilitate effective working relationships between diverse groups of people.
  • Keen business acumen and proven executive management abilities based on prior experience.
  • Polished interpersonal and communications skills (written & verbal), with ability to communicate proactively and effectively with executive leaders across the company, must have ability to easily speak to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Must be independent, innovative, creative, organized and capable of managing multiple tasks, as well as setting individual day-to-day priorities. Must have the ability to interact effectively with co-workers, understand and follow policies and procedures and accept constructive criticism.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles and best practices, including software development in various languages (C#, Node.js, Java etc.) and frameworks (.NET)
  • Experience with application design and architecture of complex, scalable, performant, extensible, highly-available software platforms
  • Experience with a variety of data stores, like SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB as well as others
  • Knowledgeable in more than one software development methodology
  • Experience with multiple cloud offerings including Azure and AWS
  • DevOps implementation experience, such as infrastructure as code (IaC), (CI/CD) a plus
  • Previous experience in regulated industries highly desired (finance, healthcare)
